Background
Landfills are a significant source of methane emissions due to the anaerobic decomposition of organic waste. Methane is not only a potent greenhouse gas but also poses explosion and fire risks if accumulated in enclosed spaces. Regular monitoring of methane leaks is critical for both environmental compliance and site safety.

Challenge
A regional waste management company was tasked with conducting monthly methane inspections across several large landfill sites. Traditional ground-based inspections were labor-intensive, often missed surface leaks, and posed risks to personnel due to unstable terrain and gas exposure. The company needed a faster, safer, and more accurate way to survey methane emissions across wide landfill areas.

Solution: BL-CH4 Sensor + DJI M350 Drone
The company adopted a drone-based inspection system using the
BL-CH4 laser methane detection sensor integrated with the DJI Matrice 350 RTK (M350) platform. The BL-CH4 sensor uses TDLAS (Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy) to detect methane concentrations remotely in PPM·m, allowing for real-time, non-contact leak detection.

Inspection Process

Pre-flight Planning: Flight paths were designed to cover the entire landfill area, including capped cells, active tipping faces, gas vents, and leachate collection systems.

Automated Flight with DJI M350: The M350’s high payload capacity and stability allowed the BL-CH4 sensor to scan from 10–50 meters above the surface, even in windy conditions.

Real-time Data Collection: Methane concentration data was transmitted live to the ground station, with GPS-tagged values for each detection point.

Post-flight Analysis: Detected leak zones were mapped and classified by severity. Follow-up teams were dispatched to confirm and repair emission sources.

Key Outcomes

Inspection Efficiency: Reduced inspection time by over 70%, covering up to 2 km² of landfill area in a single flight.

High Sensitivity: Detected minor surface leaks that ground-based sniffers often missed.

Enhanced Safety: Minimized personnel exposure to hazardous gas and unstable terrain.

Regulatory Compliance: Supported accurate reporting for environmental audits and greenhouse gas inventory tracking.

Client Feedback
The landfill operator reported significant improvements in inspection speed, data quality, and safety. The BL-CH4 and DJI M350 solution is now being expanded across their other landfill sites.

Conclusion
The integration of the
BL-CH4 methane sensor with the DJI M350 drone provided a reliable, accurate, and scalable solution for landfill methane monitoring. This drone-based approach is setting a new standard for smart environmental monitoring in the waste management industry.
